For the Germans, Walcheren was the key to the Western Scheldt and so to the port of Antwerp. Heavy coastal batteries therefore stand around Westkapelle, Domburg, Zoutelande and Vlissingen. In November 1944 the fighting for the estuary took place here; the dyke at Westkapelle was bombed and the island flooded.
